She wasn't always so confident While Jakes Roberts is known for helping women bring out their inner confidence through her Woman Evolve movement , she admits that confidence hasn’t always come easy to her. “I used to wear my insecurities on my sleeve and thought people were also judging me. I became a mom at an early age, at 14 years old, and I think what makes being a teen mom unique is you’re walking around with the evidence that you went through something. I looked for so many things to try to make me look better. No matter what people see, it’s what I see when I look at myself; I work on what I see when I look in the mirror.” 2. She believes "soul care" is the new self-care It’s no secret that "self-care" has been thrown in our faces this past year more than ever. But Jakes Roberts encourages women to go beyond self-care activities — like going to the gym or getting your hair done — to reach a deeper level of introspection that focuses on how we’re actually doing inside in our hearts. “When we practice soul care, it helps us create better boundaries for our life. A lot of times, we have boundaries based on how we used to be, but soul care allows us to have the opportunity to determine how we get to show up in the world. This has to be daily because we’re not the same people every day. This helps me feel more confident from the inside out.” 3. Her biggest fear was once public speaking S hocking, right?!? Despite the fact that Jakes Roberts speaks to thousands of people during her motivational talks, it took her a long time to get over her fear of simply speaking to strangers. She admits she was always worried her words would “come out wrong” and she wouldn’t say what she exactly meant. But, she found a way to move past it. “Overcoming my fear of public speaking has allowed me to help other people and help them see themselves and God in a different way. I got to the point where the importance of what I had to say overshadowed my fear. When I’m connecting with others, I want them to experience freedom and confidence and be the best version of themselves so much that I overcame myself in order to get it done.” 4. She's a co-pastor with her husband Jakes Roberts is the daughter of Bishop T.D. Jakes and pastors a dynamic community of artists and professionals in Hollywood alongside her husband, Touré Roberts. Together they have six beautiful children and reside in Los Angeles. While she admits working with your spouse is either a recipe for success or disaster, Sarah was excited to say that it works for them. “I have so much respect for who my husband is, how he leads and how he interprets what’s happening in the world. He’s one of my mentors and working with him gives me direct access to one of the most brilliant men I’ve ever met and then apply them to my company and organizations. I feel like I steal his ideas, but we’re married so it’s fine! It’s all the same thing” 5. She says faith and fashion aren't mutually exclusive Jakes Roberts launched her own fashion line as part of Woman Evolve to present an alternative for women of faith who like to be stylish. “Fashion is a big part of the faith community. Maybe not in the way we see on the runway or in street style, so I wanted to find a way that my faith didn’t have to change the way that I like to show up in the world. I like to look fly and pray and meditate — I wanted to make sure these could all live in the same place and Woman Evolve was the way to say you can slay and pray all at the same time.” This article originally appeared at Today.com .
Carmen Dianne, an entertainment industry makeup artist, found herself isolated in 2020, with time to think. COVID-19 was highlighting the inequalities in economic security around the country, while protests against the brutality and murder of Black people by the police were taking place. Dianne began to consider what she could do to contribute to her community. At the same time, she learned, her friend and clothing designer Kara Still was also looking to make a difference. Amidst the Black Lives Matter protests, there was a call to support local Black businesses, but, with L.A.'s sometimes-isolating geography, customers don’t always know where to find them. Dianne and Stilles began to consider creating an opportunity to share their favorite Black businesses with people that might otherwise be outside their reach. Their solution was to create Prosperity Market , a mobile marketplace of Black chefs, farmers, and artisans, that pops up all over Los Angeles. Prosperity market is a weekend-long event. Friday is the virtual market where you can fill your online cart with everything from produce to pre-prepared vegan meals to freshly-made juices. Saturday is the in-person market where you can meet those makers or pick up the goods you bought online with no contact. On Sunday, Dianne and Still give back, distributing produce boxes and meals in South Los Angeles. According to Community Health Council Inc, South Los Angeles is a community of 1.3 million people, serviced by just 60 grocery stores–one grocery store for every 22,156 people. Prosperity Market has partnered with organizations to bring fresh produce to this underserved area. “We work with organizations that want to feed the community,” says Still. Most of the boxes of the organic produce come from Summaeverythang Community Center, a project started by artist Lauren Halsey as a way to feed South Los Angeles and Watts. The Social Justice Learning Institute also contributes food and resources. “California is the largest producing agricultural state in the country [yet] L.A. specifically has the highest number of food-insecure people. That’s crazy to me,” remarked Dianne. Another important aspect of Prosperity Market is their support for black farmers, especially urban farmers. They have partnered with Farmer Ken, who has turned a backyard hillside in East L.A. into a food forest, IGH Gardens in Bell, Crop Swap which asks gardeners to share the extra veggies they’ve produced, and others. “Urban farmers, even if they make a living doing it, even if they’ve been doing it for years and years, don’t qualify as farmers. Which makes it a lot harder for them to get funding. Even if they are feeding hundreds or thousands of people off of the things they grow. But because their land isn’t a certain size or they’re not in a certain area they can’t be categorized as farmers and that creates a lack of access to resources that could make a difference” says Still. And when it comes to selling their products it is another battle. “It’s impossible for urban farmers to become vendors at traditional farmers markets where you may need organic certification. It takes seven years to get it and it's very expensive. It’s not an easy process," she says. "So people grow the most beautiful food, all organic, no pesticides, but they have to jump through so many hoops to be certified." Dianne and Still are helping to create a space for urban farmers to sell the produce they take so much time and care to grow–and they have plans to grow Prosperity Market, too. The pair are working on a 48-foot mobile trailer, part of which will be a rotating food truck and the rest a grocery store on wheels, stocked with produce from Black farmers. The trailer will move through Los Angeles neighborhoods sharing organic produce, cooking classes, and nutritional education. They’d like their model to be replicated in other cities and states, sharing the support they’ve gotten from the Compton Community Garden and Dr. Gail Myers, the founder of Freedom Farmers Market in Oakland, with others. “Stimulating the local economy and the local food system really has a ripple effect to the impact that local government and all of the things that come from that,” says Still. The health and well-being of a community starts with food sovereignty and local support.
Shereese Floyd, CEO of Witness My Life, has launched Break the Glass: Thought Leadership Academy, a 12-week professional development curriculum teaching mid-career and senior-level black women to become thought leaders so they can get paid for their ideas and not their labor. The program starts on September 11, 2023. Floyd, an award-winning speechwriter, storyteller, and consultant, has worked with thousands of women throughout her 20-year career to uncover profitable and marketable skills garnered through their lived experiences. Encouraging Black women to be impossible to ignore. Black women earn the majority of bachelor’s and master’s degrees (American Association of University Women), yet are passed over for leadership positions and are more likely to have their competence and judgment questioned (Lean In, McKinsey, and Company Women in the Workplace Report 2022). In her work, Floyd notices a pattern where no matter how accomplished Black women are, some believe obtaining one more credential will earn them the respect they seek. There is an internal voice that needs to be silenced. Floyd’s insights coupled with the data inspired this program built for black women to stop auditioning for their value and to speak, write, teach, and brag. Break the Glass addresses oppressive narratives and societal norms black women face when external voices become internal barometers that limit their self-perception. Since COVID, thought leadership has emerged as a proven path to professional advancement. 56% of recruiters said thought leaders can command a premium salary compared to non-thought leaders and 82% said thought leadership is more important to employers than before the pandemic. (Thought Leadership on Your Career). “As a Black woman, to combat inequities, we have to be our own solution. With Break the Glass, my goal is to bridge the gap between aspiration, ambition, and achievement. In the program, you learn then implement so by the end, you’ll either command your seat at the table or create your own,” says Floyd. Becoming the greatest story ever told. Break the Glass’ curriculum emphasizes the importance of Black women seeing their expertise and perspective as assets that transcend limitations and helps them transform their personal stories into profitable brand stories so they can take up space in their industries. In 12 weeks, participants develop essential skills to be successful thought leaders such as ideation, storytelling, writing, public speaking, pitching, branding, and relationship building. Participants leave the program with a complete thought-leadership talk and action plan ready to execute. This experience is designed for black women to center themselves and take charge of their brand by building a platform that positions them for higher salaries and/or in-demand professional services. Additionally, organizations can sponsor their employee’s participation in the program or license it for their own learning and development initiatives.
